Expose Young Girls to STEM and educate parents on the opportunities within the field, encourage participation in special programs, support learning opportunities in the community.
Serve as a mentor: there are some great schemes out there to help and inspire, one of which is Black Girls do STEM (Mentor Directory | Black Girls Do STEM – bgdstem.com). The website has a mentor directory with some great contacts and inspiring stories.
Teach students about leaders in the field and role models making gains in the STEM world, just like the women we have highlighted in this piece. Doing so signifies belonging in the community and encourages students to achieve just as highly. The examples you use in your teaching are important, so be mindful of the experiences and aspirations of the students in your classroom as you choose who to represent.
Representation matters!
