The Modjadji Royal Family and Council has been waging a legal battle to have Khelobedu recognised as the 12th official language. They have also appealed to the Commission for the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities for the language’s recognition, arguing that the Modjadji Royal Family rules over 129 communities with a population of about 1.1 million.
